ARTIST STATEMENT
"'Lupin the Third' has been interpreted over and over again. Lupin the third itself derived from Maurice Leblanc's Arcene Lupin. Which was also clearly inspired by Sherlock Holmes. These characters appear as almost different people with different backstories and motivations.
There is very little that pins the Lupin universe down besides its characters. This is one of my favourite things about this franchise! It embodies freedom and fun! For a while I struggled to find a single idea or theme that I thought would encompass what I thought "brings these five together".
I decided to explore what I believe are some of the only consistencies between the different Lupin installments and each character's various depictions. Eventually I landed on showing what a typical episode or franchise instalment might depict - thievery, betrayals and thrills! All of our main characters oscillate around these ideas whether they reject or embrace them.
Compositionally I took inspiration from the album art for Steely Dan's "Can't Buy a Thrill". As I worked on the piece it moved away from that but I think it still comes though (somewhat). This album (and Steely Dan's discography in general) really reminds me of Lupin the Third but I also just felt inspired looking at it. I ended up with a very self indulgent work! Which I think is what 'Lupin the Third' is all about."
